Acerca de esta escucha
Born to a single mother who would prefer she didn’t exist, Morgan has spent much of her young life in pursuit of one thing - a father. But when her close friendship with an older neighbor begins to attract suspicion, and connecting with her birth father isn’t at all how she imagined it would be, Morgan’s long-held hope begins to dwindle. That is, until, at the age of 14, Morgan meets Bill - her 45-year-old martial arts instructor.
At first a teacher and father figure who Morgan can confide in, Bill soon reveals that his interest in her isn’t entirely paternal. Despite her initial fear, Morgan craves the attention Bill is more than willing to lavish upon her, resulting in a several-months-long affair that will alter the course of both of their lives.
Spanning four years of Cauley’s adolescence, The Places Left Unfilled explores in harrowing detail the circumstances that may lead a child to find solace in their sexual abuse. Told with immediacy and remarkable candor, Cauley’s gripping narrative will stay with you long after you’ve finished listening.

Historia
One summer day, Margaux Fragoso meets Peter Curran at the neighborhood swimming pool, and they begin to play. She is seven; he is 51. When Peter invites her and her mother to his house, the little girl finds a child’s paradise of exotic pets and an elaborate backyard garden. Her mother, beset by mental illness and overwhelmed by caring for Margaux, is grateful for the attention Peter lavishes on her, and he creates an imaginative universe for her, much as Lewis Carroll did for his real-life Alice.

I’ve loved him from afar. Though most times he’s only a foot away. I’m smart enough to know he’ll never be anyone’s forever. He checks all the bad boy boxes. If he wasn’t my neighbor and friend, I may have thrown myself at him. Okay, I wouldn’t. Instead, I pathetically savor morsels of moments where I have his sole attention. That was until his archenemy moved in with me. Now suddenly, Dylan’s moving in, too, and warning off the first guy in a long time who’s showing me interest.

Historia
Culter Fuller came back into my life on the day my mother died, as if losing my mother wasn't bad enough. We hated each other since childhood. Well, I hated him, and I thought it was mutual. He had a very different story. When I moved to my dad's house to finish my last semester of high school, we went from bitter enemies to...something else. He was suddenly everywhere, occupying my space, determined to pull me into his life, filling me with thoughts I knew were wrong. I knew that soon we would cross a line that should never be crossed.

I don’t want you. You mean nothing to me. I never loved you. I turned my words into swords. And I cut her down. Shoved the blade in and watched her fall. I said I’d never hurt her and I did. Years later I’m faced with all the little lies, the untruths, the false realities, the damage I inflicted when all I wanted was to indulge in my obsession. Lavender Waters is the princess in the tower. Even her name is the thing fairy tales are made of. I used to be the one who saved her. Over and over again.

Historia
Robert Westfall's life is falling apart - everywhere but in math class. That's the one place where problems always have a solution. But in the world beyond high school, his father is terminally ill, his mother is squabbling with his interfering aunts, his boyfriend is unsupportive, and the career path that's been planned for him feels less appealing by the day. Robert's math teacher, Andrew McNelin, watches his best student floundering, concerned but wary of crossing the line between professional and personal. Gradually, Andrew becomes Robert's friend, then his confidante.

I can’t stand the narrators voice
Despite the bad voice of the narrator (I can’t recall if the author is narrating? But if so that would make sense given the adult voice trying to sound younger), the story is interesting. I do feel the book ended abruptly and there are more loose ends I wish she would have tied up and others I wish she’d elaborated more on. I would’ve liked further explanation about her relationship with her mother. I also would have liked to know if she ever reconciled with Jamie. Did her friendship with the other survivors endure in any meaningful way? If they drifted, did they ever reconnect? I don’t like how the author seems to still be in denial about the power imbalance between she and her abuser or how she romanticizes the relationship even as an adult. However, I suppose that is the sad, awful reality of what really happens. It’s like Stockholm syndrome in a way. All of that said, still a great read.

Unforgetable!
This is an unusual memoir in that it doesn't gloss over uncomfortable details nor does it bend to conventional thinking. It's straight forward and sincere.
And Margo Brialis adds real authenticity with her incredible performance. She voices characters distinctly and very appropriately. This is truly an unforgettable memoir.
