Earth is dying. When nothing more can be done, they make a conscious, final decision: place themselves into cryosleep and wait it out.

Roberson and Hatch later awaken to find Pioneer intercepted by the Imperium—a vast interstellar civilization that claims to have been expecting humanity… for three hundred years.

Beyond Imperial borders, ancient forces known only as the Shadows are stirring—entities that do not merely attack fleets, but minds. As Roberson is drawn into a role far greater than command of a single ship, he begins to experience unsettling visions, subtle physical changes, and fragments of memory that suggest his connection to the Shadows may be far older than this mission.

Caught between political power, cosmic war, and a destiny he never sought, Roberson must lead while questioning what he is becoming—and whether humanity's survival comes at a cost it may not understand.
