Sole Assassin of President Kennedy, or the "Fall Guy" for a Conspiracy? Or Something Else?
Among the many enigmas in the saga of the Kennedy assassination, Lee Harvey Oswald remains among the most enigmatic. The Warren Commission painted a portrait of a lone malcontent, but still could find no motive for his alleged actions. Some conspiracy books attempt to turn Oswald into a deep cover intelligence agent, always on assignment whether defecting to the Soviet Union or distributing pro-Castro pamphlets. Other authors ignore Oswald altogether.
In The Oswald Puzzle, experienced researchers Larry Hancock (Someone Would Have Talked, Tipping Point) and David Boylan square the circle. Taking the full measure of the same data the Warren Commission collected, they paint a contrarian picture of Oswald, a man that may surprise you. And then, using their expertise and the vast declassified records now available, they tell the story of how Oswald appeared on the radar of fervent anti-Castro activists in New Orleans in 1963, and how he was then turned into their pawn.
Hancock and Boylan, in considerable detail, provide a scenario which reconciles Oswald's actual history and character with the massive evidence of conspiracy in the assassination of President Kennedy. Has the puzzle of Lee Harvey Oswald finally been solved? Was Oswald a murderer or a patsy? The Oswald Puzzle provides new answers.

Finally the authors rehash the litany of Cuban paramilitary groups whom have already been fully covered by previous studies, and attempts to link them to Oswald without once mentioning the names David Ferrie and Guy Bannister. (Jack Ruby is mentioned in passing). They do take Clare Booth Luce at face value though. This sort of goofery allows them to wildly speculate that Oswald thought he was going to hijack a plane to Cuba, based solely on a tip from Mr.January of Red Bird Field, and MO stating that LO mentioned hijacking once, maybe.
Somehow this all leads to Oswald being framed in a very vague way by some Cubans. Trust them, they recited a whole phone book of names for us. And somehow they smuggled in the old rifle to the TSBD ( which cannot be tied to LO legitimately, btw). No matter, it’s all just speculation.
Curiously, the authors state that LO taught himself Russian in Japan. Certainly he would have been able to speak Spanish, given his sketchy unproven speculative connections to the DRE, Jure, etcetc. Not once is it ever explained that Oswald spoke Spanish.
They make disingenuous arguments against Oswald being part of a fake defector program, asserting that anyone who subscribes to that theory must believe that he was in Russia to give U2 spy plane shoot down info. One can argue that Oswald was part of the program without subscribing to the U2 theory. The authors simply swat away the skeptics by referring to their rehash of WC testimony as to Oswald’s character and they don’t ’believe’ his temperament was suited to that program. That logic might work for a casual reader.
If you aren’t satisfied with the authors’ bad faith analysis, no problem, they refer you to their other book which they promise will sort out all the issues. This is all very disappointing, as one imagines younger generations interested in Oswald picking this book up and taking it at face value.
Flawed portrait of Oswald based on bad sources & Unnecessary speculative rehash of Cuban groups
