In this short story, Updike likens a marriage to the mixing of chemicals to create a new compound. Performed by Jane Alexander with the same confidence and clear mindedness of the author, this exploration of the breaking apart of this union is sensitive and engaging. Alexander draws on her long career as an actress to portray the divorcing couple with a tinge of regret and anger. What had once been the symbol of their joy of being together is presented with a dour tone of devastating remorse by Alexander as the couple moves on with their separate lives.
