Shadows are not born, they're made.

A boy and his brother want to do more than survive, they want to live, but in a place where even flowers bloom wilted and the ground is dead, that is nearly impossible.

Two boys grow up and find love in the darkest places only to have it stolen away in a torrent of traumatic experiences until their only option is to make the ultimate sacrifice to save The ones they will leave behind.

Forged in the dark and steeled by trauma, This recollection of a certain Shadow's past spans over his lifetime and sheds light on the how and why one finds themselves in a position to make...

I’ve read this book before but I wanted to know if the audio brought more pizazz to an already phenomenal book, and by gods, yes, Ethan did. Marcey’s writing already pulls me into a word of dark despair and Ethan is the icing on the cake.

My original review of the book:

Look, the way this woman writes will forever be ingrained in my psyche.

This novella really pulled out every misery a man can endure in 30 years.
A true Dark Fantasy.

I love the way it goes into certain years, the big years that shaped the man he became (Briar), from his father, to his mother, best friend, and first love.

During the novella, his name is not mentioned once, because if you've read the first novel, A Tempest of Shadows, you know that Briar is a nickname of sorts because he forgot his true name in the abyss. It is told as if he is telling the story of his first 30 years to someone else.

Marcey's world-building continues to be my favorite of all time. It's dark and broody. She paints vivid pictures as I read, and I'm able to see it all as I read.

I can't wait for the next masterpiece she bestows us with.
