THE WINE-DARK SEA AWAITS

A man trying to get home. A journey of ten years. Gods who help, gods who hinder, and monsters who devour.

Homer's Odyssey is the Greek epic that invented the story — the template for every quest narrative, every homecoming, every hero who must lose everything before finding what matters. Nearly three thousand years after Homer first sang these verses, Odysseus still speaks to anyone who has ever been lost and longed for shore.

This translation renders the ancient Greek masterpiece in clear, modern prose — no artificial archaisms, no verse that trips over itself trying to mimic hexameter. Just the story, told with the pace and power of a contemporary novel.

WHY PROSE?

Homer composed in verse because he sang. We read. A prose translation removes the barrier between you and the narrative, letting the story breathe without the awkwardness of forced meter. The goal is simple: the Odyssey as vivid and immediate as it was for listeners in ancient Greece.

WHAT MAKES THIS TRANSLATION DIFFERENT

  • Modern prose — clear, swift, direct
  • No faux-archaic language
  • Accessible without being dumbed down
  • Complete and unabridged (all 24 books)
  • Includes original Afterword

Since Richmond Lattimore's landmark 1965 translation, readers have found their way to Homer through Robert Fitzgerald's elegance, Robert Fagles' energy, and Emily Wilson's groundbreaking 2017 version. Most have rendered Homer in verse.

This translation takes a different path: prose that honors the story, not the meter. Whether you're discovering Greek mythology for the first time or returning to Homer after the Iliad, this Odyssey is built to be read — not performed.
