The Necessity of Reforming the Church has been considered by many to be one of John Calvin's most important works. In this short letter, Calvin lays out his polemic for why the church must bring her beliefs and practices in line with scripture. Written to address the abuses and corruptions that occurred in the church during the Middle Ages, Calvin pastorally and forcefully addresses issues that carry into our present day. Though the forms and appearances of these corruptions in the church may have changed since 1543, the truths given in this book remain ever applicable to our modern situation.

Calvin before he became a grumpy old man

A very interesting work that gives insight into the causes of the reformation, as well as the stances of some of the reformers and of the Catholic Church.

I strongly dislike the manner in which Calvin wrote the Institutes, where he often has a condescending attidude towards those who disagree. In this work he speaks strongly for his views and against his opponents, but he does not have that condescending attitude.

A NECESSARY READ FOR CHRISTIANS

Informative book that helps understand the underline issuses of the reformation.

P.J. Ochlan did a wonderful job reading this book.

Needs a modern English translation

It’s an eloquent, incisive, intelligent, and (mercifully) concise defense of the Protestant reformation. Only problem is that this version is in (more or less) Shakespearian English.
