In Paris, Detective Dupin and his sidekick deduce the truth behind an unsolved murder. Edgar Allan Poe based this story on the disappearance of a real woman called the "Beautiful Cigar Girl". With its focus on reasoning, "The Mystery of Marie Roget" sounds like an essay rather than short story. So, characters fall flat at times. Kary Shale saves the day here. Shale won Reader of the Year for his performance of Life of Pi and an Audie Award for Slumdog Millionaire. A personable tenor, Shale handles French easily. Sigh. Interesting as an exposition of logic and reason, but VERY verbose. I can understand why this one is not one of Poe’s popular works.
I appreciate Shale’s narration of this story.
