In a futuristic, dystopian America plagued by unrest and growing distrust in science, Dr. Nicholas Cyrus, a renowned scientist, finds himself at the center of what he believes could be a breakthrough in his career. However, the assignment takes a sharp turn when he realizes things aren’t what they seem. He is partnered with a loyal workaholic recovering from a difficult breakup, someone he connects with almost instantly. Together, the duo work to uncover why a young boy has Modified, unaware that what they discover could change everyone’s lives.

With tensions continuously rising rapidly across the United States, Nick must act quickly to protect himself and his friends who begin to feel more like family. The choices he makes along the way not only alter the course of history but also deepen the divisions already tearing society apart.

Ok, but not what I was hoping for..the author tried a slightly different approach, but it just wasn't for me.

I like the authors portrayal of the dangers/consequences of pollution. the narrator was great at portraying the emotions of the characters in the story.

Taylor did a fantastic job at breathing life and energy into this story of a dystopian future that was a bit on the nose as far as current events and political climate goes. Each character held a unique tone and personality that gave listeners a clear portrait of their role and individuality. Taylor narrated in a way that built palpable connection between each character in the book, not only with each other but between them and the reader. While listening to this book, I felt my emotions and thoughts were easily translated out from the pages through the voices of the characters and the story dialogue.

The story captures your imagination with the premise of how environment impacts progression of the species. The reader, Taylor Monroe, has a terrific voice. He keeps the story at a good pace, with no lag. I will definitely be looking for more with him.

I encountered two tiny issues: There is a writing style used occasionally herein that I find to be immersion-breaking. The audio quality is good enough, but I would have preferred a bit more fidelity. The story and performance are on-par with other environmentally-centered global warnings with smart scientists and dumb politicians. ("Don't Look Up", I'm looking at you.) Our main characters are well-defined with believable backgrounds and natural dialogue. The science part requires some suspension of disbelief, but otherwise fits within the slightly futuristic setting. Narration and voices by Taylor Monroe are easy to listen to with appropriate timbre and emotional cadence. All in all, a compelling and tense cautionary tale that big corporations and bigger politicians should rarely be trusted to uphold the public's well-being. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 2.0x.]
