The Misadventures of Mathew Mathews (Wizard, Occasionally Competent)
Book One in the riotously funny magical mystery series.
Mathew Mathews is a wizard. Sort of. Technically.
He solves magical problems for a living—missing people, haunted biscuit tins, occasional werewolf-related incidents. His office is above a chip shop. His coat has too many pockets. His cat talks. (Exceptionally well.) And his help is often requested by the police, but never officially, and never willingly.
So when a seemingly routine case spirals into a magical conspiracy involving a dark wizard with terrible taste in chairs, an alchemist declaring war via fermented fruit, and the resurgence of an ancient magical council with far too many bylaws, Mathew’s going to need more than tea and sarcasm to survive.
Thankfully, he has:
  • Julia, who turns out to be a magical powerhouse hidden behind cardigans and calm competence,
  • Smudge, his ginger tomcat with a PhD in passive-aggressive grammar,
  • Timothy, a reanimated skeleton who lives for a good biscuit,
  • And Albie, a teenage werewolf with sibling troubles and an unfortunate habit of biting furniture,
  • Oh, and Maisie, Albie's little sister.
They are the good(ish) guys. Then there are the villains...

Together, they’re either the best chance magic has, or its final nail in the coffin.
Expect: Exploding furniture, cursed muffins, magical tribunals, ancient grievances, talking cats, aggressive students, and far too much wine.
Magic has rules. Unfortunately this lot forgets them. Frequently.
Anarchic sarcasm shriller than a blunt instrument
Perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett, Ben Aaronovitch, and people who talk to their kettle out of habit.
