The Miner's Heart

Paulina Black has struggled with the feelings that come with being a widow for the entirety of the year she's mourned her husband. Going by her maiden name has helped a little, but it doesn't fill the hole in her heart.

Now that her year of mourning is done, she is not sure how to go about with life. She thought she'd have a family by now. Without a husband, she's not sure how she'll accomplish that. And she's not ready to put herself back out into society in a courting capacity.

Eugene Richardson has been yearning for a family since he moved south of San Francisco for mining work. His sister thinks he's a fool for putting an ad out in The Matrimonial Times, but he knows that it's going to be the best way to get what he wants. There just aren't enough women in San Francisco or the surrounding areas. He can only hope that he'll find someone he can learn to love.

When Paulina comes across Eugene's ad in the newspaper, she initially thinks he'd be a good friend. But as her feelings deepen, she wonders if she could ever truly move on from her late husband.
