Hans Christian Andersen uses Il Porcellino as inspiration for this tale of a young beggar boy who encounters the Metal Pig, takes a sip from its fountain, and falls asleep. He is soon awakened, however, as the Metal Pig has come to life, and takes the boy on a ride through the streets of Florence. It is a rare moment of levity for this abused child, who later becomes an artist, and commemorates the Metal Pig with a beautiful painting. Howard Wolfin performs with a remarkable depth of feeling, capturing the joy and sadness of Andersen's story with acute sensitivity.
