Acerca de esta escucha

Exiled from the court of Queen Elizabeth for accusing a powerful nobleman of treason, swordsman-turned-spy Mal Catlyn has been living in France with his young valet, Coby Hendricks, for the past year. But Mal harbours a darker secret: he and his twin brother share a soul that once belonged to a skrayling, one of the mystical creatures from the New World.

When Mal’s dream about a skrayling shipwreck in the Mediterranean proves a reality, it sets him on a path to the beautiful but treacherous city of Venice – and a conflict of loyalties that will place him and his friends in greater danger than ever.

Can we smack Coby now?

I enjoyed this continuation of the alternate world that was introduced in the first book. I still like Mal and his efforts to do his best under difficult situations. I liked the interactions on the seas with pirates and people running back and forth between countries. Venice was a great location for learning more about the Skraylings and their secret impact on the world. I felt so bad for Ned and I appreciated how carefully Gabriel tried to take care of him after he was injured. The steampunkish aspects were interesting, and Coby's one big redeeming moment.

Coby is still an insufferable twit who makes such a big deal out of being respectable and proper even though she's made her living hiding who she actually is. For a while I thought she was becoming more adventurous and less judgmental, and then nope, nevermind, there's her familiar puritan behavior. She even goes to another country and proceeds to blather about her disapproval of their culture. "You'll have to learn better manners if you are going to spend time with good Christian folk." She pulled a face, "Some heathen ritual..." Smack! Right in the kisser!

It was a good listen.... onward to the next book!

Terrible. . .

What would have made The Merchant of Dreams better?

A different author

Has The Merchant of Dreams turned you off from other books in this genre?

no

What does Michael Page bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was fine, the story was lacking

What character would you cut from The Merchant of Dreams?

the hero's supposed "best friend"

Any additional comments?

I had hoped there would be a new location and new cast of lesser charaters after the agony of book one. I only made it fifteen minutes into the book before giving up.
