Resumen del Editor

Did you know that not every passenger aboard the Mayflower was a Pilgrim?

In fact, of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower, only about 40 were fleeing England for religious reasons. And if you want to learn more fascinating facts about this cultural icon, pay attention....

The Reformation brought sweeping changes across Europe. In England, that led to the formation of a small congregation of radicals known as the Separatists. These were ordinary farmers and craftsmen who simply didn’t believe in the Anglican Church, and they found themselves hounded out of their own country like criminals.

So began their quest to find a new home - a home where they could be safe and free. A home where they could raise their children in peace. A home where they could practice their beliefs without fear of persecution. But in order to make that happen, the Pilgrims had to face many insurmountable obstacles.

The story of the Pilgrims is one of unimaginable odds. Somehow, they had to finance their voyage and then survive it. Finally, they would have to establish a colony in uncharted territory and find a way to make peace with its inhabitants, who were by no means happy to have their homes invaded.

There are so many things to learn about the Mayflower’s voyage, and just a few of them include:

  • The personalities of the fascinating individuals who crossed the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower
  • The changes in Europe that led to the Pilgrims’ voyage
  • Where the Pilgrims fled to before boarding the Mayflower
  • How the Pilgrims financed their voyage
  • How conflict grew between the Saints and Strangers aboard the Mayflower
  • Why the Pilgrims didn’t land at the mouth of the Hudson River as they had planned
  • How the Mayflower Compact became the world’s first attempt at democracy

Sympathetic portrayal of the pilgrims

The difficult voyage of 102 persons reduced to 50 after a winter of disease shows the resiliency of our founders.

Such a thought provoking journey!

This audiobook gives great insight into the back stories of those lives surrounding the journey of the Separatists, and others, on the Mayflower. From it's beginning to it's end, my mind would compare their culture to that of current day. I could feel their longing for the freedoms they sought after. I felt their agony when disappointment and/or tragedy struck. The book offered relatable material to help grasp the gravity of events, such as equating the writing and distribution of religious papers to be such a crime then as heroine and cocaine are today. That just puts new depth to the impact upon those being persecuted for wanting to follow their faith and not that of the King. One thing I felt was revealed more in this book that other histories I have read is the feelings the Separatists had towards those they deemed as outsiders on the Mayflower. I mainly knew that Pilgrims wanted a new home. I never realized that the majority on the Mayflower were not there for religious freedom. The Separatists did not view them favorably, and it's interesting to see how they grouped themselves from them by making sure they were deemed as "Saints" and the rest "Strangers." To be cramped on a vessel that long with those feelings, and to never come together and join forces for what they were like minded on, I found interesting. It rose feelings in me that the Separatists felt threatened on some level that the freedom they were ultimately after may be in jeopardy. They didn't seem to reach out and grow their cause any. Did they not see what they were doing was akin to how they felt from others back in England? In the end, the good of love did prevail in them caring for those sick and that brought something in to soothe the soul.

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. That certainly strikes a vibe today. Those involved on the Mayflower were able to see through uncertainty, collect their thoughts, and strike up a new form of government that would cover their bases. Today we forget to look back on such things at The Mayflower Compact and pause on them. There's much meat to digest, and many lessons to be learned, if history is heeded to instead of being erased.

Details on the ships themselves was fascinating. I knew all about the Speedwell and return visits causing delays to the initial journey. What I didn't know were the extra details on the Mayflower itself and what impacted it's strength for the voyage it was undertaking. I shall leave specifics out here as not to spoil it for the listener. I did chuckle a bit at the quite handy tool that happened to be on board to save the day. I resonated with that because my family is quite the hobbyists and we enjoy the right tool for the right job and have plenty of tools handy. I could relate to that person who tucked that device away in their belongings!

The narration was nice. I do feel in the beginning the back stories were a bit choppy. Receiving so much info on that many people called for a more intent listen. It didn't flow as smoothly as the rest of the story. If I had a book in hand I would have been able to slow down and process those connections better.

Overall this was an enjoyable listen with nice insight into the many lives and cultures that were impacted by this journey.

What an interesting journey to the New World

Every event in history starts with one small act and then the story of the mayflower it started over 100 years before was Martin Luther disagreeing with the indulgence Faye Catholics had to pay to do simple things like eat cheese or me. People would pay a fee to hear those sins forgiven and he disagreed with this and it started his war on the Catholic Church and questioning the pope which no one had ever done before this led to many different changes in Europe but mainly England and eventually lead to people fleeing the country to have religious freedom and eventually they would come to the New World which we now know is America and they would take that trip on a ship called the mayflower. This was such an interesting book I love to read how one thing leads to another in history it’s always an interesting journey and true to captivating histories style they tell you all the different dominos that had to fall to get to the main subject of the story. It is always an interesting journey I highly recommend this captivating history book. It is titled the mayflower but you will learn so much more this is just another example of why I am obsessed with captivating history books!

Great overview of the reality of the Mayflower.

This book gave a realistic view of the actual harsh reality surrounding the facts of what happened before, during and after the voyage of the Mayflower. It gives a unbiased look at what the separatists and native Americans went through regarding the Pilgrims and colonists settling in America. Also great narration.

gut wrenching, yet inspiring

a fairly indepth telling of the people who struggled to find a new life, in an uncertain environment. it was interesting to hear that the mayflower was actually 1 of 2 ships who attempted to make the perilous journey.

a must read, especially in US schools

Its a great start

Now I have learned about the plight of the pilgrims in school, but it was not so detailed as this. Narrator was fantastic to listen to, I just wish my history sounded this interesting. Now this is just a start to look up the people that was part of the crew to help setup Jamestown and what they had to go through to get settled with the help of natives. Never realized on how close they all came to dying. Now I have to find more books on this and learn more. I do recommend this book, its not very long but it holds a ton of knowledge to get started with.

So interesting!

Another great book by Captivating History. We all learned about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower in school but there was so much more detail in this book than in any course or any other book that I've read on the subject. As usual, the information is well balanced, giving us the details about what the Pilgrims did well and where they were off course.
