Good story - but

The main problem with this is not the virtual voice, but the lack of research. One cannot travel by horseback literally across the US in 3 months. Using the roads, you can probably make it in 8, taking pit stops into consideration. The minor characters are generally monotone - old guys ok, younger semi to completely bad.. Main family has to be nerodivergent. Good to listen to otherwise, but the lack of proper research into what it takes to make such a journey kept knocking me out of the story to shake my head at the mistakes.

Solid understanding of lost skills

I liked a review of lost skills: horsemanship, canning, gardening, basic hunting, game preparation, reading a situation. Nothing in detail like the foxfire books. More of an overview if interested in deeper learning. Good character development.
I grew up in a high mountain wilderness area, wood stove, kerosene lanterns, and I learned how to hunt, first rifle, at age six. Wilderness survival school with the military they called me McGyver. Skills you can’t ever learn from a book. Shelter in the deep snow at ten thousand feet and the temp has dropped to minus. No food for three days, dehydrated. Small group of special military. You better know what you’re doing or it’s game over. My team would have starved to death or froze without me. lol how do you build a fire on top of six feet of snow in order to let it burn down to hard ground and then become a shelter?
Wild foods, snares, and how to actually hunt. Not just from a book or you will die.
I liked this book. Brought back good memories. Especially the horses.
