Reseñas editoriales

Writer Rafe McGregor’s short story "The Long Man: A Sherlock Holmes Encounter" is a delightful romp featuring Chief Inspector Roderick Langham of Scotland Yard, who is posing as a stockbroker to investigate an arms smuggling operation. At an inn, where he is tracking his target, he meets a loquacious professor named Edford. His undercover assignment goes awry when the academic is found dead. Enter Dr. Watson and Holmes. David Ian Davies gives an engaging, masterful performance, imbuing each character with a distinctive voice.

Resumen del Editor

As he follows and observes an arms smuggling operation while on undercover assignment for Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Roderick Langham encounters Holmes and Watson from a distance at the village inn. The morning after taking the tour of an archeological dig with the talkative professor Edford, the pedant is found shot dead at the site and the Baker Street duo are on the scene.

Good reading for a poor story.

Too much time spent on inconsequential actions and not enough on solving the actual mystery. Entire mystery solved in last 30 seconds with no real tie-in to the whole story. You're just left hanging, expecting more.

Efficient Holmes whodunnit from another perspective

A very worthy Sherlock Holmes story told in first person by a Scotland Yard detective who crosses paths with H/Watson pair at a remote area of intrigue. There’s no preamble so the context evolves with the plot (which accelerates quickly near the end, my only possible complaint). This isn’t dummied down or prolonged so be prepared to give full attention if you’re trying to figure it out with the characters. As a Holmes fan, I found this very satisfying....there’s a break at 15:29 but if you skip forward then back, it’s all there.

Incomplete Recording

As of 06/03/09 the recording is 15 minutes long. I believe it should be considerably longer.

Approximately 9 minutes into the recording the narrator (not Holmes or Watson) is walking toward an archaeological site in the company of a professor. In the NEXT SENTENCE, the narrator is looking at himself in a mirror. He has blood on his face, a growth of beard, and is considering the need to solve the professor's murder.
Holmes' first appearance in this story is a past-tense reference to actions and deductions which are not a part of the recording. The story then sweeps on to its ending.

I have notified Audible.com that the recording appears to be incomplete and Aufible is investigating.

A misfire

David Ian Davies reading is the best thing this story has going for it. It just sort of starts in the middle of a story and ends with no satisfactory conclusion. it is so short that I have little to recommend.
