WHY READ THIS BOOK?

We answer with holy Job:

Because "The life of man upon earth is a warfare'' (Job 7:1); a spiritual warfare, that is. Nonetheless, we should never get discouraged because Our Lord, as St. Padre Pio tells us, "permits the spiritual combat as a purification, not as a punishment. The trial is not unto death---but unto salvation!" Despite this, we may sometimes feel that our yoke is too heavy to bear; that perhaps, the burden might be better placed on someone else's shoulders. But no, says the same Saint, "your present state is willed by God for the salvation of your soul."

Let us furthermore be consoled by the words of St. John Vianney, "the Cross is the gift that God makes to His friends."

So, instead of complaining, "we ought," as St. Claude de la Colombière tells us, "to be thanking Providence!"

And that we may face our trials a little better, let us take the advice of St. Philip Neri who counsels us to "accept the adversities which God sends us without reasoning too much upon them;" and to "take for granted that it is the best thing which could happen to us."

IN THIS BOOK we have selected and present five hundred categorically arranged pieces of salutary wisdom from the Saints with the hope that it may serve as a portable aid unto perseverance in "the way that leadeth to life" (Matt. 7:14).
