“Readers will be on the edge of their seats…. A brilliant tale of resistance, courage and ultimately hope.”
Kelly Rimmer, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Orphan

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Bookshop in London comes a moving new novel inspired by the true history of America’s library spies of World War II.

Ava thought her job as a librarian at the Library of Congress would mean a quiet, routine existence. But an unexpected offer from the US military has brought her to Lisbon with a new mission: posing as a librarian while working undercover as a spy gathering intelligence.

Meanwhile, in occupied France, Elaine has begun an apprenticeship at a printing press run by members of the Resistance. It’s a job usually reserved for men, but in the war, those rules have been forgotten. Yet she knows that the Nazis are searching for the press and its printer in order to silence them.

As the battle in Europe rages, Ava and Elaine find themselves connecting through coded messages and discovering hope in the face of war.

This book was wonderful, I enjoyed the characters, the story line, and all the research the author did to make it historically correct.

A story of bravery and endurance

Great stories and so many details, felt like I was there, I loved the stories of Eileen and Ava, wondered their connection throughout the book, very captivating! Highly recommend!

Enjoyed this book very much!

I enjoyed the story and the story it represents from WWII. I found the story meandered until the last few chapters. I still cried. 😁

Slow Slow build

The author brought the story alive, making you feel the desperation, desolation, determination and triumph of the human spirit against overwhelming odds. Yet the characters never lost their compassion nor let their rage overwhelm their soul. I am in awe of those who fought, sacrificed, and persisted even when they felt little hope of success, not satisfied with just survival but determined not to let the oppressors have the final say. The descriptors of each scene made you feel as if you were there, feeling the hunger, or tasting the beautiful pastries, feeling the aching tiredness, the racing of their hearts, etc. Brava for not letting us forget the humans side of history!!

The narrator breathed life into the characters and made you hear their voices, the clattering of their wooden soles, their racing heart. Well done!

Wow!

This novel brought fourth the terrible casualties of war, the most vulnerable, the innocent civilians! How Hitler destroyed so many lives and the families who resisted. The spies deserve medals for their valor and heroism! The author brought this to light.

Eye Opening!
