Lucinda Williams’s rise to fame was anything but easy. Raised in a working-class family in the Deep South, she moved from town to town each time her father—a poet, a textbook salesman, a professor, a lover of parties—got a new job, totaling twelve different places by the time she was eighteen. Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. But she was also born a fighter, and she would develop a voice that has captivated millions.

Lovely memoir and the author’s voice seals the deal
I love the easy narrative style that allows the reader/listen to read with ease and get comfortable. And just as you get comfortable, Karr hits you with a depth that engages your soul and hooks you into her life and forces you to reflect on your own. Will read this one again.

What a writer.
This wasn’t in my radar- but wow. I am so glad I found it. She is a heck of a writer. I don’t understand how she remembers so many details of her childhood, but she does, and we are all better for it. Don’t let the more monotone voice fool you- this is an essential memoir for all memoir lovers.

Mary Karr is the Queen of Memoir
Read this book many moons ago, and loved it. Revisited it in audio form and had a whole new experience, listening to Ms Karr herself narrate. Wow. Moving and funny and scary and profound. Humans make good stories. The end.
