The New Testament Letter to the Hebrews offers powerful testimony regarding the person and work of Jesus Christ. The letter affirms that Jesus is the very imprint and image of God (1.1-2). The Son in every way proves superior to the key persons and institutions of the old covenant. His work is described in priestly terms and his priestly work produces eternal salvation for his people. Hebrews also explains the relationship between the old and new covenants. It shows how Jesus is what the old covenant was leading toward, while at the same time showing that key aspects of the old covenant are no longer valid because Jesus accomplishes their intent. Furthermore, Hebrews has a pastoral aim to exhort the hearers to hold fast to their confession of Jesus and to persevere in faithfulness to him regardless of the trials and tribulations faced in the present, which will in turn lead to a future reward. However, if they do not remain faithful, then they are to expect God’s judgment. The writer skillfully weaves together this interplay of encouragement and warning to keep his hearers from falling into apostasy.
