The Great Siege of Malta in 1565 is regarded as the last battle in history in which a force consisting mainly of Knights won a decisive victory. The Knights of St. John were the last remnants of a once great medieval army. Their mission, to protect Christian pilgrims. From their base in Malta they were so successful in repelling marauders that they crippled the Arab economy, built upon Christian slaves. As a result, Suleiman Soleyman the Magnificent, Emperor of the Ottoman Empire, assembled the world’s greatest army to eliminate these protectors of Christianity. In the ensuing battles, Sir Oliver Starkey, the last English Knight, found himself at the centre of the conflict. The future of Europe rode on his shoulders.
