Hildie and Ben Woodman were not able to have children; however, they found an abandoned little girl on their way into town five years ago who has brought so much happiness into their lives. Prior to this happening, Hester Newson enjoyed gossiping about Hildie's inability to have children and seemed to draw quite the crowd when sharing her bits of gossip. Ironically, the Woodman's little angel, Joy, is also the same age as Hester's daughter, Darla. The community soon discovers what an amazing voice Joy has, and she is chosen over Darla to do the solos in the school programs and church services.

This situation does not sit well with Hester, and she complains to Miss Benton, the schoolteacher, as well as the town council about how unfair it is for them to reward an unknown dirty urchin over her daughter without any success. She has put up with the situation for seven years now and recently discovers that Darla's school crush, Billy, has a crush on Joy...and Hester decides it's time to take matters into her own hands.
