For decades, a quartet of Chinese women who have emigrated to San Francisco gather to eat dim sum, play mahjong, and talk—they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Over the years, their stories have informed the lives of four daughters who feel the weight of family and world history on their shoulders. With wit and sensitivity, this novel explores the deep, complicated, and sometimes painful connections between mothers and daughters.

Amy Tan entices listeners to immerse themselves into the complex lives of these women.

I had to read this novel for school but somehow ended up really loving it and I've fallen for the plot that was developed in this amazing story that Ms. Amy Tan had written. I believe the most memorable parts of this novel was the dinner that they had in Waverly was calling out people for their mistakes that they had in life and everyone sat around the table eating crab. I would definitely recommend this book to people because it has an excellent story to tell of an amazing woman even though it's fictional.

Different Outlook

This book bounces around perspectives and stories from several people, so if you don't understand that a new chapter title identifying the new character is being read, it is easy to be momentarily confused about what is going on. I much prefer the Bonesetter's Daughter to this but I still liked it.

Good but confusing

This is the first time ever where I thought the movie was better. Although it was interesting to see the difference. By reading the book there was a bit more insight into some of the meanings of things said. But still the movie was better.

Very heartwarming and sad book for mothers and daughters to both read, especially together. 10/10

Amazing

The underlying message that Amy Tan is attempting to get across is the unique relationship a daughter has with her mother, the cultural differences and ultimately sacrificial love. This book is a bit confusing given it’s strategically placed chapters but it it very worthy not only for your own amusement but to gain multicultural knowledge that allows you to take a look at someone else’s culture and their beliefs.

I enjoyed this book so much. the characters are all fascinating, and multifaceted. the reader gets to experience events and places and relationships and culture from the perspective of many characters and generations. despite the many unique characteristics of Chinese culture, as the first generation daughter of immigrants, it was not difficult to relate or find common themes from my own experiences.

great read

This is my 3rd Amy Tan book, interesting, the narrator did a good job of making many voices and accents. Still, one shall like Amy Tan intricate embroidery of stories that come together in the end like a delicate Chinese puzzle. You either like it or not at all. I will not read it again but enjoyed following the story.

Intricate story and theatrical interpretation

Amazing story.
There are at least 8 main characters. All women. Thus, it would have been easier to follow if each character had been performed by her own voice actor.

Variety of voice actors needed
