Jonathan Swift
Acerca de esta escucha
Unique to this title is a study of the themes present in Gulliver’s Travels.
You may of course skip it and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers and come back later to the beginning.
Jonathan Swift was a 17-th century Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, poet, and cleric. He was also a dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. Swift had a unique writing style which many still don't know what to think about. On the one hand, he is regarded as the best prose satirist in the English language, on the other, because of his provocative writing, some considered him a monster.
Gulliver's Travels is an adventure story (in reality, a misadventure story) involving several voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon, who, because of a series of mishaps en route to recognized ports, ends up, instead, on several unknown islands living with people and animals of unusual sizes, behaviors, and philosophies, but who, after each adventure, is somehow able to return to his home in England where he recovers from these unusual experiences and then sets out again on a new voyage.

Historia
Jonathan Swift's classic novel about the loveable Lemuel Gulliver is one that is taught in high schools around the country, and for good reason. Gulliver, who is a surgeon aboard a ship, thinks that he is about to embark on a run-of-the-mill voyage to different ports. Throughout his journey, however, there are a few events that take place that redirect his ship to unfamiliar islands. Not only are they unfamiliar to him, but they are inhabited by natives who are shaped and sized much differently than he is.

Historia
The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself ‘Don Quixote’ and with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests.

Historia
When first published in 1759, Candide became an instant best seller and is now regarded as one of the key texts of the Enlightenment. Voltaire’s preoccupations with evil and with various kinds of human folly and intolerance found a perfect vehicle in this philosophical tale. A master storyteller, he combined often wildly entertaining action with profoundly serious sense, parodying the traditional chivalric and oriental tales with which his public was more familiar.

Historia
Riotous, sexy and groundbreaking, Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews: The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and His Friend Mr. Abraham Adams, published in 1742, was one of the first English novels. Fielding was melding and parodying the two major forces battling for control of the fiction market at the time - the mock heroic, neoclassical tradition as practiced by Pope and Swift and the popular and populist fiction of the new novelists such as Defoe and Richardson.

A Good Presentation of a Classic
I first encountered this book back in my first year of English lit studies in university and then again as abridged children's classics and, of course, the movie version. Likely because of those later versions, I had forgotten that Gulliver actually took four trips and how brutal and biting Swift's satire can be. It should be noted that this unabridged version is NOT for children. It is, however, a very perceptive view of the British empire and the world Swift lived in. It's also a good story, written in the travelogue format that was popular at the time and it's well read by Scarlett Bress.
Gulliver's Travels is an entertaining classic and a must for every student of English literature.

Highly entertaining
I very much enjoyed the story itself and found it to be very creative. I would have enjoyed the book more if the narrator had been male since the storyteller was male. The narrator was good at dramatic reading, but I kept getting thrown off by mispronounced words, which were many. There were also a few times when she repeated herself.

Epic adventure
I had multiple exposures to Gulliver’s Travels growing up. I saw a movie of it as a kid and I thought it was a cool adventure. Then I read it as a senior in high school. I definitely enjoyed the book much more this time around. I wish I had audiobooks while in high school. The performances make it much more palatable.
