By seminal figure Saneatsu Mushanokoji (1885-1976). Michael Guest's translation is approved by the author's estate for global publication.

Discover The Innocent, the first English translation of Saneatsu Mushanokoji's 1911 masterpiece, Omedetaki Hito (often referred to as "The Good-Natured Person"). This intriguing work, the original 'I-novel', explores identity and self-expression during Japan's Meiji Restoration, a period of immense cultural and existential transformation.

Plot Summary

His narrative melds reality and imagination, as he descends into an introspective exploration of love and selfhood. His single-minded pursuit of art and personal growth challenges conventional notions of identity.
