Hettie Way knew what a compass was, of course, but it was her long held opinion that if you needed a compass to find your path you deserved to be lost. The glass above the face was cracked and Hettie Way understood that this small round of metal and enamel marked with letters was a talisman for her daughter, an artefact, but she was uncertain whether it was for good or ill and there was a great deal at stake.

Growing up at Pike Lake, Vanessa Way was never lost. A scientific internship at a research centre in the Arctic Circle seems like a great opportunity, but the compass begins to spin and points to a destination much further away, a place called Far North and the twining of Vanessa's fate with that of Dr Lachlan Laidlaw and a lesson that the paths of Havoc Wood stretch much further than Vanessa ever suspected.
