Nell Collins grew up in the small seaside town of Bride's Bay on the south coast of England. After living and working for two years in a nearby city, Nell has been offered a job close to her home town. The house she grew up in, still owned by her aunt, is now empty, so when Beth suggests Nell moves back into it, she is delighted. But her pleasure at returning to her old home is short-lived. When she hears noises in the empty house next door, she suspects someone is living there. Her unease increases when she is followed home then receives anonymous phone calls and unwanted deliveries. Confused as to why she is being targeted and who is next door, she shares her concerns with others; surprised when her worries are dismissed as co-incidences or her imagination. Upset, she begins to question her own judgement and state of mind. But Nell is certain the incidents are real and that something sinister is going on in the house next door. As events escalate and people are not all they seem, Nell is unsure who to trust or what to believe. But she is determined to uncover what is happening, even if she has to investigate on her own. When she begins to make progress in uncovering the secrets of the house next door, she becomes a threat that needs to be removed.
