This was such an interesting listen because I always assumed the traditions we celebrate today were ancient but this audiobook completely changed my perspective. It dives deep into how things like Roman festivals and Norse mythology actually laid the groundwork for the holiday we know now.

The section on Santa Claus was fascinating to me. Seeing how he evolved from a saint in Turkey to the commercial figure we see everywhere today was really eye opening. It also covers things like the Christmas tree which I did not realize was such a recent addition to the mix compared to other customs.

It is not a boring history lecture at all as the narrator keeps it moving at a good pace and makes the facts easy to follow. If you are the type of person who likes to know the real reason behind why we do what we do then you will really enjoy this.

This isn't just another cozy holiday collection; it is a fascinating, fast-paced deep dive into the "cultural DNA" of Christmas that completely changed how I view the season. I was captivated by the connections drawn between familiar traditions and their surprising origins—from Roman Saturnalia to the "Christmas Tree Conspiracy" - which proved that the holiday is as much about history and marketing as it is about faith. Colin Fluxman narrates with an engaging, storytelling flair that keeps the historical details from feeling dry, effectively turning a history lesson into a gripping narrative. For anyone who loves Christmas but wants to understand the complex machinery behind the myths, this is an enlightening and entertaining listen.
