Their immigration fostered an idea of the "land of the free", yet more than a third returned home again. As villages emptied, some blamed traffickers in human labor, targeting Jewish emigration agents. Well written with some complaints

This book is overall well-written and informative, but the author bothered me at some points with how they addressed certain issues. I felt like they really glossed over the genocide in the Balkans, for example.

Well researched and very readable (listenable)

This is a very good piece of History scholarship packaged in a deceptively approachable veneer. Definitely recommend it.
