WW2 Beach Landings molded one, an Anabaptist nursery the other. Through these two case histories a story unfolds illustrating how traditional ways dating from the Reformation led to economically sustainable methods for farming in the Golden Triangle of North Central Montana. While an intense and enormously costly ideological cold war between capitalism and communism was being fought, the Hutterites quietly and efficiently demonstrated a capitalism that was more effective than that of most Montana farmers, and a communism that Marxists would have loved to claim as their own. The life of the Hutterites is a confounding story. How can they rationalize having only Bibles in their homes, but computers on their tractors? How do they continue to have nearly 100% of their youth stay and join the church? When farmland that supports a family today will not support that family ten years from now, how do colonies prosper for generations? And why do neighboring communities harbor such hostilities toward them? A rising issue for Montana, and all farming areas, is the future of the family farm. The cause of the financial collapse of the family farm is clear; the way to save it is far from obvious.
