The Gods of Mars begins with his arrival back on Barsoom (Mars) after a 10-year separation from his wife, Dejah Thoris; his unborn child; and the Red Martian people of the nation of Helium, whom he has adopted as his own. Unfortunately Carter materializes in the one place on Barsoom from which nobody is allowed to depart: the Valley Dor, which is the Barsoomian afterlife.

captivating otherworldly story
about a civil war Colonel who somehow ends up on Mars falls in love with the Princess of Mars and eventually gets separated from her and fights every sort of obstacle you can imagine and even some you cannot to get back to her and their love.

Mars Revisited
I struggled to finish it. The narrator just read the story. At times too much narration until I got lost and to keep rewarding. I will not read or listen to the next book & chapters, I've had enough of John Carter. LOL!

The gods of Mars
The appreciation of ERB remains despite the time that has passed. The action devices that repeat in all similar homages to his work are evident. But the pace is slow by today’s comparisons and even with the introspection of Carter’s thoughts and inner turmoil, it’s freshness has expired. The language is that of a highly educated author, not a soldier from Virginia. Too many races, names, and locations fail to stick in the memory, whereas Tolkien succeeds in this challenge to this obstacle. An odd reading but unique in tone. It sounds like an ESL interpretation.

A boring sequel to the first book
This was difficult to get through. I’m leaving the series after my experience with this blandly written book. Such a shame as I loved the first book so much.
