In Rise to Rebellion, bestselling author Jeff Shaara captured the origins of the American Revolution as brilliantly as he depicted the Civil War in Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure. Now he continues the amazing saga of how thirteen colonies became a nation, taking the conflict from kingdom and courtroom to the bold and bloody battlefields of war.
It was never a war in which the outcome was obvious. Despite their spirit and stamina, the colonists were outmanned and outfought by the brazen British army. General George Washington found his troops trounced in the battles of Brooklyn and Manhattan and retreated toward Pennsylvania. With the future of the colonies at its lowest ebb, Washington made his most fateful decision: to cross the Delaware River and attack the enemy. The stunning victory at Trenton began a saga of victory and defeat that concluded with the British surrender at Yorktown, a moment that changed the history of the world.
The despair and triumph of America’s first great army is conveyed in scenes as powerful as any Shaara has written, a story told from the points of view of some of the most memorable characters in American history. There is George Washington, the charismatic leader who held his army together to achieve an unlikely victory; Charles Cornwallis, the no-nonsense British general, more than a match for his colonial counterpart; Nathaniel Greene, who rose from obscurity to become the finest battlefield commander in Washington’s army; The Marquis de Lafayette, the young Frenchman who brought a soldier’s passion to America; and Benjamin Franklin, a brilliant man of science and philosophy who became the finest statesman of his day.
From Nathan Hale to Benedict Arnold, William Howe to “Light Horse” Harry Lee, from Trenton and Valley Forge, Brandywine and Yorktown, the American Revolution’s most immortal characters and poignant moments are brought to life in remarkable Shaara style. Yet, The Glorious Cause is more than just a story of the legendary six-year struggle. It is a tribute to an amazing people who turned ideas into action and fought to declare themselves free. Above all, it is a riveting novel that both expands and surpasses its beloved author’s best work.

Audible.com has helped me really appreciate the history poor texts spoiled for us in school. Adams, Jefferson, Jefferson and Mason and the making of a nation, and others flesh out and make real a time that still resonates for the world and us, whether in fulfillments of our values or in the sometimes abandonment of our values.
The narrator is excellent.
My tears over the tragedy of the loss of life in any war and the deep passions and fears were brought out as I listened to this narrative. Each of the characters were vibrant and I trembled with excitement at some of the battles while mourning those who endured those times.
Washington comes out almost as mythical in this account as we read of him in our high school textbooks.
This books is a joy.

Would you listen to The Glorious Cause again? Why?
I would love to start this audiobook over and catch all the little things I missed the first time around. I thought the story narrative intertwined with historical facts were an amazing way to tell the story of the war. I will definitely listen to it again at some point in my life. What other book might you compare The Glorious Cause to and why?
I've also read 1776 and Rise to Rebellion. 1776 was very dry, and while it is probably the most factually written book about the American Revolution, it didn't keep my attention nearly as much as The Glorious Cause. What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?
The emotion of the moments he read about hit me right in the heart. His cadence and voice brought the pain, exhaustion, sorrow and immense stress that all the men on both sides were feeling.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
At the moments when something incredible would happen, or extreme emotion would come over one of the men in the book, I would most definitely get teary eyed along with them. The end of the book in particular, as it was very emotional for the men to all say goodbye to each other.Any additional comments?
To anyone that would like to learn about the American Revolution (I was amazed at how little I knew) This is a perfect book to teach you. It's not a history book, but I have found I learn so much better through a little more story than straight dates and facts. It was a beautifully written and beautifully read story about the men of the war.An Engaging Book on the American Revolution

My biggest gripe is with the presentation and quality control. On multiple occasions, the performer would repeat what he has just said, as if they just copied and pasted that section twice. It happened enough that it was jarring. The performance grew on me by the end, but I was finding him quite dull in the beginning.
Great Story, Lackluster Presentation

The author has an excellent description of each character and the battles during the war. The Narrator has made the novel even more enjoyable to listen too! I give them both 5 stars.
