The Fight

I grab the washcloth I soaked in warm water and begin dabbing gently at the dried blood around his face. He hisses when I get too close to the cut on his eyebrow.

“Sorry,” I murmur.

The silence stretches as I continue to clean him up. I take my time, careful not to hurt him. I want to say something, anything.

“Is fighting still worth it to you?” I ask.

He doesn’t answer right away, and I think he’s going to ignore my question, until he finally exhales and says, “this wasn’t from my fight... It was my dad.”
