I was searching for a SUCCINCT summary of the Roman empire. I decided a month or so ago to learn about the Roman Empire, and began with audio books “SPQR” (mind numbingly tedious; too many rabbit holes deliberating on the historical research process itself) and then “The Rubicon” (stomach turning and exhausting focus on endless bloodbaths and power mad rulers and their treacherous take-downs) and was left with a jumbled and disorganized mountain of blood, death and names that i couldn’t keep straight, along with a sense that there was actually NOTHING good about the Roman Empire..

Hoping to find a summary more thoughtful and thematic and less pedantic or blood thirsty- i finally found EXACTLY what i was hoping for in this book.

Despite being (obviously) high level and relatively cursory in only an hour (compared with the 15 hours of each of the other two books) it managed to give comprehensible mentions to much of the history and at the same time adding thought provoking extras that assisted with understanding the trends and themes of the empire’s progress. I was free of the stomach turning sensation that tortured my progress thru the Rubicon and able to find INTEREST in the unique, relevant and important history of Roman Empire again, in an organized digestible hour of listening.

Great summary of Roman empire
