This thesis of this story is that growing up is not easy. We all need someone to help us traverse those difficult years when we are filled with doubts and fears. Of course, during the depression years life was not easy for anyone living on a self-sufficient farm in Southern Indiana. Everyone worked hard, and no one was guaranteed anything. At the beginning of the book the shy, skinny, timorous boy seems destined to fail. However, with the acceptance, support, encouragement, and guidance of his old friend he is able to meet each challenge and expand his horizon and capabilities as he deals with all that life offers on the ever-flowing river of time. It is his old friend who helps the boy over many rough spots and leads him on toward the future. It is he who teaches him how to deal with discouragement, fear, rejection and criticism, girls, marriage, parenthood, a career, and even death. All of us have a story. This is a story of an old man, a young boy, the old man's wife, the boy's wife, and two babies. It is a story of how they deal with the same problems that we all have. It is a story of how their faith sees them through life's problems and leads them on into an inviting future. All of life is a gift.
