Resumen del Editor

History is not, and has never been, inert, certain, merely factual, and beyond reinterpretation. Taking listeners from Thucydides to the origin of the French Revolution to the Civil War and beyond, James M. Banner, Jr., explores what historians do and why they do it.

Banner shows why historical knowledge is unlikely ever to be unchanging, why history as a branch of knowledge is always a search for meaning and a constant source of argument, and why history is so essential to individuals' awareness of their location in the world and to every group and nation's sense of identity and destiny. He explains why all historians are revisionists while they seek to more fully understand the past, and how they always bring their distinct minds, dispositions, perspectives, and purposes to bear on the subjects they study.

Erudite and animating

This erudite and animating survey was both enlightening and captivating.. I would very much return to this with the published text.

Racing narration ruins an excellent book

This is a great book. I assigned it to my graduate historiography class. It is, nevertheless, a very approachable and lucid account of the history of history for the general reader who has a love of history. The narration, however, it just awful. Was he given a time limit? Has it been accidentally speeded up in production? I can't think that anyone would think it is appropriate to read so quickly that the result is garbled and almost unlistenable. It certainly adds nothing to the listener's comprehension of the material. It's like a bad student presentation!!! I slowed it down to 0.75 and it is much, much better, which does make me wonder if it was tinkered with and speed up. I wish there was a choice to slow it to 0.8 or 0.85 that might be perfect.
