The last priest of the celestial temple climbed the ziggurat steps for the final time, the bronze eagle clutched against his chest. Below, the great flood waters receded, leaving only mud and silence where the first city had stood. The Anunnaki had departed, their work with humanity complete—or perhaps abandoned.
At the temple's peak, he carved the final words into the eagle's base with trembling hands: "Ašaredu amāru"—The Eagle Watches. Then, wrapping the sacred sentinel in blessed cloth, he buried it deep within the temple's heart, along with the other tools of divine observation.
