Across town, at Rico’s Auto Repair, the clang of wrenches and the roar of engines formed a chaotic symphony. Rico, a whirlwind of grease-stained overalls and easy charm, was a master of his craft. He could coax life back into the most stubborn of engines, his hands possessing an almost magical ability to diagnose and mend. He also had a keen eye for detail, a knack for noticing the subtle inconsistencies that others overlooked. Murk had started frequenting the shop, under the guise of needing minor work done on his nondescript sedan. It was a calculated risk, an attempt to build a new, albeit tenuous, network, to weave himself into the fabric of this new life, however threadbare.
"You’re here a lot, man," Rico said, leaning against a lifted chassis, wiping sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. "Car giving you trouble?" His grin was friendly, but his eyes, dark and sharp, held a flicker of something more. Curiosity, perhaps, or something harder to define.
"Just being cautious," Murk replied, the standard response honed to a razor's edge. "Can't be too careful these days. Things can go wrong fast." He gestured vaguely, a phantom threat hanging in the air.
Rico chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. "Tell me about it. Had a guy in here last week, his transmission went kaput right in the middle of Elm Street. Caused a traffic jam a mile long. Some people just don't know how to maintain their rides." He paused, his gaze lingering on Murk for a beat too long. "You seem like a guy who knows how to maintain things, Murk. Keep things… running smoothly."
The implication hung in the air, unspoken but palpable. Rico wasn't just talking about cars.
