A widowed mother, ready to give love another chance, moves into her fiancé’s old family home with her teenage daughter. But as they try to build a future together, the past refuses to let go in this haunting short story from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Unger.

When Jules first meets the handsome artist Kirin, she’s still mourning her husband’s death, but a fairytale romance soon sweeps her off her feet. Now she and her daughter Scout are moving out of the city and into Kirin’s once-lonely mansion. He’s thoughtfully updated and adapted the home to match their personalities. But Scout is determined to keep her father’s memory alive by rejecting the new life her mother and Kirin have spun for her.

Scout’s sullenness begins to fade, though, when she finds a beautiful handmade doll in one of the many empty rooms in the house. Kirin says that the doll belonged to his late sister and he’d like Scout to have it. Scout’s hopeful for a connection over their shared grief, but as she grows more curious about Kirin’s sister, she can’t escape the feeling that a danger lurks in the house…and its gaze is fixed on her mother.

Disliked how short the story was, it felt rushed and not a lot of suspense.

The Doll’s House by the brilliant Lisa Unger tells the story of a grieving mother with a teenage daughter who faces second chance in life.

Even though doubts and fears came up, moving on was the next necessary step for this pair. And so they did.

Changes were tough but finding a talented, successful and wealthy man to share your life with, may be encouraging!

Unfortunately, mother and daughter will discover the ulterior motives behind such an amazingly creative man.

Dark, creepy and delightfully creative!

Go for it! A dark and twisted well written story!

I 4.5 Stars – Creepy, Quick, and Absolutely Unsettling

Okay… The Doll’s House by Lisa Unger was the perfect eerie little read I didn’t know I needed. It’s short, yes but it’s heavy on atmosphere and gave me that weird chill I crave in psychological thrillers with a touch of the supernatural.

So we’ve got Jules, a widowed mom, moving into this creepy, over-the-top mansion with her daughter Scout and her new fiancé Kirin (red flag number one, too perfect, too fast). From the second Scout finds this handmade doll that belonged to Kirin’s dead sister, I was like nope, burn it immediately. But of course, it’s a thriller, so things have to get weird before they make sense.

The house honestly felt like a character all on its own, dark corners, hidden rooms, way too many secrets. Lisa Unger did such a good job creating this unsettling energy that kept building page after page. I was holding my breath and clutching my blanket the whole time.

Told from both Jules’s and Scout’s points of view, I loved how you got two different kinds of fear, one from a cautious, grieving mom trying to trust again, and one from a sharp but vulnerable teenage girl who sees more than the adults do. That dynamic…So well done.

I will say, the ending came a little fast for me. I wanted just a bit more explanation or depth, but at the same time, the mystery and the open-ended creepiness totally worked for this story.

If you’re looking for something fast, spooky, and emotionally layered with just enough twists to keep your heart rate up, definitely add The Doll’s House to your TBR. It’s one of those stories that sticks with you even after you’ve turned the last page… or turned off the lights.
Hehe 😉

A nice little short story by Lisa Unger that delivered huge.

A widowed mother and her teenage daughter move into her new fiancé’s extravagant home, but soon thereafter there are signs that something dangerous lurks within their new home.

I listened to this audiobook version and the narrators were amazing bringing to life the two POVs between mother and daughter.

Mysterious and eerie with a touch of creepy. For such a short story it kept a good pace and left me hanging on every word.
