Resumen del Editor

Revolution has come to Mars. Max Lupine has been secretly creating a virus to pacify and enslave the populace. However, a mining accident triggers a premature release of the virus and sets off a pandemic that causes the majority of the populace to become mindless killers. Beverly Gibson, lead scientist of the Delta Dig, tries to rally a resistance not only to battle the infected that roam the populated living domes of Mars, but to stop Max Lupine from consolidating his despotic power. Beverly is assisted by Edgar Lourdes who is the only man on the planet with the ability to diagnose and combat the virus. He must discover how the virus was created and how to save the millions of people living on Mars. Recently arrived Thomas Stargell must battle across the Martian landscape to find Beverly's resistance group and help them break Max Lupine's control of the communications on Mars. He must attempt to contact Earth and hope they will come to the aid of the beleaguered Martians. When Lupine discovers how to control the infected the stage is set for a final showdown to find out who will control the future of Mars. Beverly's rebels and Lupine's forces meet in a climactic planet wide showdown that will cost many their lives and force the people of Mars to become revolutionaries or find themselves under the control of a madman.

NOT A BAD STORY, BUT I GOT BORED!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Ehhh maybe....it is long and drawn out...and I was bored at times...

If you’ve listened to books by Jeff Ferry before, how does this one compare?

I have not..

Which character – as performed by Roberto Scarlato – was your favorite?

Edward

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no

Any additional comments?

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Its ok as far as a zombie story goes..interesting twist...thought it was going to be more exciting...but it wasn't...Roberto's narration was good....and overall a decent book...just not going into my fave list....Basically a virus was manufactured to make mine workers more productive, and it goes terribly wrong...the man who does this is the head representative of Mars Max Lupine decides to try and cover his tracks by cutting off all communication with earth and starting a war...he then decides just to demolish most of Mars...well a group of people, including scientists and military get involved and save the day!

not plausible but it is a fun story

In the not too distant future, Mars has become the bastard child of Earth, ignored and abused. The thousands of inhabitants living and working in the several large domes are beholden to the corrupt and abusive mining corporation. Everyone mines for the energy rich mineral earth will pay dearly for, or die trying, not much else matters.

Because of its distance from earth the corporate leadership has devolved into a dictatorship drunk with its own power. They devise a plot to release a mind control virus into the air system so they can use the workers to mine the energy rich ore faster and more cost effectively. Unfortunately, the virus is released prematurely and life devolves into a zombie apocalypse on a Martian scale.

Zombie plots are always ridiculous, dead or dying humans who eat brains, defying physics and physiology. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love reading, listening and watching them. They are just fun. So as Mars crumbles into a civil war, the zombies are eating everyone’s brains, and all is mayhem. That’s the good part.

Dawn of Mars isn’t a bad book, but it is kind of cringe worthy at times. Many of the characters are two dimensional, such as the evil hit man with no redeeming qualities, who just loves killing and torture; or the corporate leader who wants to destroy everyone and everything so he can be in power. There isn’t much logic in being king of a junk pile, but that seems to be his goal. On the other side, the good guys continually get out of impossible jams while simultaneously forming a new government, fighting overwhelmingly superior fire power, beating back hungry zombies and devising a cure for the pandemic.

The story is read by Roberto Scarlato. He has a good, clear voice, but tends to read somewhat slowly and with strange inflections, getting in the way of the story, never quite transparent, so that you always know he’s there.

OK, the plot and science aren’t exactly plausible, but it is a fun story none-the-less. If you go in knowing what you are getting, you’ll enjoy the ride.

A New world for us to explore

Would you consider the audio edition of The Dawn of Mars to be better than the print version?

Yes, I like to cook, drive, clean and sometimes listen while I'm at work. With a book I'd have to put it down to get anything done. Plus a good narrator can bring a book to life that I might not have been able to get into otherwise.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Dawn of Mars?

When the star ships showed up and were threatening to start a war on the planet Mars if the major didn't give up command of the planet. That was pretty intense. I was glad the author decided to go with the reasonable solution for the captain of the ship in the lead.

Which character – as performed by Roberto Scarlato – was your favorite?

All the main characters were pretty intense. Max Lupine was the bad guy trying to take over. He was a believable character. I can imagine a top official doing what ever it takes to be 1# and take control of everything.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No only because it was a little long for that. But I did enjoy the book and would listen to a book 2 when it comes out.

Any additional comments?
