Resumen del Editor

For everyone who loved Pride and Prejudice - and legions of historical fiction lovers - an inspired debut novel set in Austen’s world.

Charlotte Collins, nee Lucas, is the respectable wife of Hunsford’s vicar and sees to her duties by rote: keeping house, caring for their adorable daughter, visiting parishioners, and patiently tolerating the lectures of her awkward husband and his condescending patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Intelligent, pragmatic, and anxious to escape the shame of spinsterhood, Charlotte chose this life, an inevitable one so socially acceptable that its quietness threatens to overwhelm her. Then she makes the acquaintance of Mr. Travis, a local farmer and tenant of Lady Catherine.

In Mr. Travis’ company, Charlotte feels appreciated, heard, and seen. For the first time in her life, Charlotte begins to understand emotional intimacy and its effect on the heart - and how breakable that heart can be. With her sensible nature confronted, and her own future about to take a turn, Charlotte must now question the role of love and passion in a woman’s life and whether they truly matter for a clergyman’s wife.

Interesting book

I normally don’t go for a JAFF that don’t have Elizabeth and Darcy as main characters, but I am glad I did. This was well written and explaining a bit more about Charlotte and her choices in life. A bit morose but still a lovely story. Well narrated as well.

Charlotte’s POV never written better!!!

If you are looking for a rare Charlotte POV gem then I recommend “The Clergyman’s Wife” by Molly Greeley! It popped up on my Bookbub recommendations today and I couldn’t put it down! I felt as if I was Charlotte! (Of course I wouldn’t want to marry Collins but you can empathize with her and better understand why she made her choice.). Loved the story!

enjoyable

Very much enjoyed the story and the tension at the center. Narrator was good, but I believe the proper historical pronunciation of Maria is "Mariah" and it bugged me probably more than it should have.

okay

The story did not go anywhere. it was a sweet story of unrequited love and without the backdrop of Mr. Collin's grossness depicted in Pride and Predjudice. The book did not move me, although it is well written and well read. I did not like Charlotte's criticism of Mr. Bennett and his lackadaisical approach to managing Longbourne.

Poignant and Delicately Written

A beautifully written novel . I’ve always identified with the plain Charlotte Lucas, and The Clergyman’s Wife brings her to life in a way that feels authentic to Austen’s original work. So much is happening beneath the surface of the action in this text. So much is left unsaid. I was expecting a light and fluffy romance. Instead, I found the moving exploration of the heart of a woman and a testimony to the strength of female spirit. This novel has made me very thankful for the strides feminism has made. Highly recommended for all fans of Jane Austen.

Nope.

Was hoping for a lovely book about Charlotte. Was not looking for a sad, disappointing book that made me depressed.

Charlotte Lucas’ ongoing story

A delightful and touching, very cleverly done treatment of “what might have become of Charlotte Lucas” after her marriage. I enjoyed every word and regret only that it had to end. But then I always felt that way when Jane Austen’s novels ended also.

Tissue alert

What a lovely, emotional story, and a worthy addition to all the follow-ups to Pride and Prejudice. The author captured the language and manners of Jane Austens wonderful classic. It’s a rare book that makes me cry, but I am a weepy mess !
Perfect narration 💕

😣

IF ONLY. IF ONLY. IF ONLY.
This story is really heartbreaking. Charlotte chose her lot in life with her eyes wide open. But of course it is one thing to think she know prudence and then another thing is actually experience the consequences of her prudent choices.
I am sorry to say that I actually was hoping for Mr. Collins' death so Charlotte would be able to marry for love.
