Nancy Drew and her friend Helen can't swim, but their rowboat capsizes in the lake when a sudden storm strikes. Thankfully, Laura Pendleton, an orphaned girl new to the area, was there to save them. The new friendship of the three girls is lucky for Laura, too; her new guardian Mr. Aborn doesn't seem right somehow, and she confides in Nancy that she thinks he's evil.
