Resumen del Editor

The struggle for power continues in the sequel to The King of Bones and Ashes from Wall Street Journal bestselling author J.D. Horn.

With their magic diminishing, warring factions of New Orleans witches desperately search for the Book of the Unwinding - a legendary grimoire, hidden by spells, that holds the key to unimaginable powers. As a ruthless struggle erupts in a maelstrom of malevolent magic, psychic Nathalie Boudreau finds her destiny intertwined with that of an exiled witch.

Her name is Alice Marin, a vulnerable young woman trapped in a realm of illusion. Only Nathalie can free her, but first she must come to understand and master her own extraordinary abilities.

Now, in a world where betrayals have become the order of the day, it will fall to two women to restore rightful balance amid terrifying chaos.

This is a wonderful follow up to the first book

I was excited to listen to this book based on how good the first one was. I was certainly not disappointed by an means. Just as enchanting as the first. Loved it!

A dark fantasy

The Book of the Unwinding
Witches of New Orleans, Book 2
By: J. D. Horn
Narrated by: Sophie Amoss
I won this ebook from Goodreads giveaway so I spent the extra 1.99 for the audible version, (yes, this author doesn't shaft you with a tremendous amount of money on top of the book for the audible. Very few authors have a decent price still.)
I really enjoyed this dark fantasy with witches, demons, death, another realm, and mysteries. I didn't read book one first which I felt lost at first, I felt I was in a crowd and everyone knew a secret but me. Read book one first! I will have to go back and read it now and I may listen to the audible again, (and break my rule of not re-reading) so I can get the full effect of this book.
The narrator was spot on! Should you get the audible you won't be disappointed. Great performance!
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to letting me read your book, I know the review was voluntary but I feel I owe you that for the book and being decent enough to have low prices on your audible when buying with the book. Thanks again.

Read this in 2019

I suggest waiting until the trilogy is complete before reading. Otherwise it will be a long wait to understand this story. After reading this, I immediately looked to see when the next book would be published. I should have saved this on my wish list until 2019. But I love this author and his stories.

Kinda boring. And eye rolling

Lots of talk about magic but very little actually being done.
And underline politics; women are oppressed, white people can’t be trusted and all men are weak, evil or stupid.

Lovely

Characterizations continued recognizably and with greater depth. Narrator's voice carried me into story and to conclusion with no disappointment.

Not as good as the first book in the series

The plot meanders a bit as the author tried to wrap seemingly separate story lines together. This gives the book a bit of a piecemeal feel about this. And seemingly larger plot lines from the previous book don't play out with the same importance. It was not as cohesive as I would have liked.

Dark fantasy aficionados will love!

Sometimes there are those books that you don’t read alone in the dark...this is one of them. Recommended for dark fantasy lovers...

Sometimes there are those books that you don’t read alone in the dark...this is one of those books (or if you have an overactive imagination like me you don’t read it when you’re home alone at nighttime because every noise you hear...). There is a creep factor to it and it’s awesome! Would recommend to those who enjoy dark fantasy mixed with real world authenticity.

As with the first book in the series, there is a lot of information and stories happening via different characters viewpoints. The author has helped remedy any confusion in the story by placing a character list in the beginning of the book- use it, it’s your friend. This book was easier to follow than the first and faster-paced in some parts (in my opinion).

Minimal spoilers below……..

Similar to the first book: the story is a combo of fantasy mixed with real world authenticity, magic, witches, clairvoyant, New Orleans life style, young lovers, old lovers, betrayal, mystery.

Things that are new: Magic is disappearing from the world, while the witches of New Orleans are trying to keep it but are still scrambling from the previous events. The seven gates to the underworld are said to be located in New Orleans. Yes, there is more, but I’m not giving all the spoilers away. It’s hard to pick a favorite character because they each bring something unique to the story, but I look forward to seeing how Nathalie and Alice’s stories play out.

The details are once again phenomenal. The series has a darker tone and I would not recommend for those who are not into dark fantasy, faint of heart, or children.

I highly recommend the audio book. The audiobook adds to the story as the narrator did a brilliant job. I find myself reading the not so good reviews and saying “if only they would have listened to the audiobook”...

#abrknpoet reviewed The Book if the Unwinding

The Book of the Unwinding by J.D. Horn is a thrilling addition to the supernatural fantasy genre that effortlessly weaves together magic, mystery, and intricate world-building. Set in the enchanting backdrop of New Orleans, this novel takes readers on a captivating and imaginative journey filled with secrets, complex characters, and an intricate plot that will keep you guessing until the very end.

One of the standout aspects of Horn's writing is his ability to create a vivid and atmospheric setting. The vivid descriptions of New Orleans, with its rich cultural tapestry and mystical undertones, bring the city to life and transport the reader into a world brimming with enchantment. Horn's attention to detail is commendable, as he expertly captures the essence of the city, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.

The characters in The Book of the Unwinding are diverse, multi-dimensional, and incredibly compelling. Horn takes care to develop each character, giving them distinct voices and motivations that drive the story forward. The protagonist, Alice, is a strong and resilient heroine who undergoes a transformative journey throughout the book. Her growth and development are well-paced and believable, making her a relatable and engaging protagonist.

The intricate plot is filled with twists and turns, keeping readers engaged and eager to uncover the secrets of the magical world Horn has created. The blend of witchcraft, folklore, and complex family dynamics adds layers of complexity to the story, creating a sense of intrigue and anticipation. Horn expertly balances the supernatural elements with emotional depth, ensuring that the story resonates with readers on a personal level.

However, one minor flaw in The Book of the Unwinding is the occasional pacing issues. At certain points, the narrative slows down, and the plot becomes slightly convoluted. While these moments do not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the book, they can momentarily disrupt the flow of the story.

In conclusion, The Book of the Unwinding is a captivating and imaginative novel that successfully blends elements of magic, mystery, and family drama. J.D. Horn's skillful writing and attention to detail create a rich and immersive reading experience, transporting readers into a world filled with enchantment and intrigue. Despite minor pacing issues, this book is a must-read for fans of supernatural fiction, and I eagerly anticipate what Horn has in store for future installments in this series.
