Resumen del Editor

A fiery spirit dances from the pages of the Great Book. She brings the aroma of scorched sand and ozone. She has a story to tell....

The Book of Phoenix is a unique work of magical futurism. A prequel to the highly acclaimed, World Fantasy Award-winning novel Who Fears Death, it features the rise of another of Nnedi Okorafor's powerful, memorable, superhuman women.

Phoenix was grown and raised among other genetic experiments in New York's Tower 7. She is an "accelerated woman" - only two years old but with the body and mind of an adult, Phoenix's abilities far exceed those of a normal human. Still innocent and inexperienced in the ways of the world, she is content living in her room speed reading ebooks, running on her treadmill, and basking in the love of Saeed, another biologically altered human of Tower 7. Then one evening Saeed witnesses something so terrible that he takes his own life.

Devastated by his death and Tower 7's refusal to answer her questions, Phoenix finally begins to realize that her home is really her prison, and she becomes desperate to escape. But Phoenix's escape, and her destruction of Tower 7, is just the beginning of her story. Before her story ends, Phoenix will travel from the United States to Africa and back, changing the entire course of humanity's future.

Great Story Weaving! ❤

I am sure that in time this book will be read first and those people may rate this a little lower than I, but the way I was introduced to the story gives me a different perspective which is ecstatic!

Although I am still hoping for a book 2 this story answered so many of my questions. Nnedi did a wonderful job world and character building in this. The book is very entertaining an thought evoking.

I listened till the end but somehow missed it(?)

The ending seemed abrupt. Otherwise 5 stars. side note, the detailed descriptions of the various Ethiopian dishes made my mouth water and want to search out an African restaurant!

Stunningly unique and beautiful story

The Book of Phoenix by Nnedi Okorafor took me completely by surprise in the best possible way. I went in really not having any idea what to expect, and what I got was a near future sci-fi wrapped in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi starring a Nigerian anti-heroine who I grew to love in the way only fictional characters can make us love. I also was surprised that my new favorite narrator, Robin Miles, performed this audiobook and (not surprising) she was absolutely perfect. I am now completely hooked on this author and will be promptly diving in to the companion book!

Interesting story, imaginative.

I think that I would recommend this book. I was compelled to listen to the whole thing. It is imaginative and the storyline is uncommon. At times the descriptions were lengthy and somewhat rambling, but because I wanted to know what was going to happen I was willing to listen to those sections. At times just the opposite. It jumped around so the continuity was difficult. There were times I wished that I had a hard copy so I could flip back and reintroduce myself to details that I assumed I missed. However, that was not a problem because, again, I did want to know what was going to happen. There was a “B” storyline that I felt was unnecessary, but that’s a literary critique. Opinion. All in all if you are a person who enjoys imaginative dystopian, other worldly novels, I would recommend it.

I want to enter this universe again

Enjoyable read and I hope the author continues to expand the universe she created with future NYC, This one went a bit into comic book terrority more than Who Fears Death. But that's ok because it was handled well. Okorafor's imagination paints us a world where the wealthy pay billions for the blood of designer clones, mutants, and various other gifted and special genetic anomalies spanning the human race. That's not the plot, but it's an element in the story that left me unable to put the book down.

incredible

it's hard to compare this book to "who fears death" because it's a lot to compare to such a masterpiece but after a chapter or two I was hooked! you won't regret it and the wifi performance was BRILLIANT! the voice actor was incredible and did so many choices amazingly well. she also read with just the urgency and pacing required by the text. she is truly an amazing actor.

Intense, imaginative and relevant.

Nnedi Okorafor is one of my favorite authors her ideas are so original and fresh. I read this book about 4 years ago and decided to listen to it this time. Robin Miles was perfect for the character and plot. Her voice added an immediacy to the events as the story unfolded. I'm not sure if that's why the book felt even more relevant now or if it's just the times we're in. This is a wonderful book by a very original author, that's even more intense when listened to!
