In the murky swamplands of Southeast Texas, where Spanish moss drapes ancient oaks like funeral shrouds, stands a decaying mansion with a blood-soaked history. They call it "The Bonehouse," and its walls hold secrets darker than the blackest bayou waters.

Lorelei Morgan, a hard-drinking L.A. private investigator with more debts than dollars, is desperate enough to take on a job that reeks of danger and madness. Her mission? Uncover the truth behind local legends of hidden treasure and unspeakable crimes within the rotting halls of the Bonehouse. But as Lorelei peels back layers of lies in this forgotten corner of the South, she finds herself ensnared in a web of corruption that spans generations.

The Bonehouse is a searing Southern Gothic Noir novella that will leave you questioning the very nature of justice, redemption, and the price we pay for uncovering long-buried truths.

I enjoyed the story, especially around this Halloween season. There are some gaping holes in the story, some that demand a suspension of basic logic, but it is a work of fiction. The narration was great and that is what kept me involved with the story. The shading of the narrator's voice for each character kept me hooked on the narrative. I would have liked to have the story to have been a little longer so that some of the holes could be filled in and the confusing timeline made more accessible. Overall, a worthwhile listen.

Good but want a longer exposition

I was a little confused by the storyline, but the narrative kept me interested. The setting was a good listen so close to Halloween. It was suspenseful and kept me engaged.

This was an interesting listen. The narrator’s cadence and smooth voice connects you to the characters with ease. I found myself trying to engage with the main character, often almost yelling out “No, don’t do that!”. My main critique is that the storyline could have been better developed, especially towards the end. Overall, I enjoyed the listen and would seek out other books performed by this narrator.

Great narrator

Madison Cross-Battle’s narration is my favorite part of this title. She truly understands how to bring these characters to life. That’s probably why I wanted to throw my speakers across the room when Lorelei didn’t IMMEDIATELY go to the FBI. Once you read it you’ll understand my frustration. Overall the story had some plot holes and confusing bits, but I had fun tagging along on Lorelei’s journey unraveling the mysteries of The Bonehouse.

Narrator Voice ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It seemed from the beginning of the story that the author was going to talk about inequities of a past age and how they were reconciled. The man in the beginning who offered so much money in order for the detective to find out or find in that house the evidence never really followed up at any point in the story. I did like the idea of someone who was trying to make their life better than what it had been. I had a lot of sympathy for how difficult that could be for the main character. Although, I was confused at the part where the main character went to the bone house and there were all these mangled bodies on the front lawn, but there was never any real explanation about whether that really had been some sort of ceremony or not. So there were a lot of ideas that were presented, but not developed or followed through with. It was also confusing because the main character seem to be committed to being better and then give a big speech and then gamble away something with no real explanation other than her dad became a bad cop who was proud of her. Only to do things for which she nor the dad could be proud? And I wasn’t quite sure how to feel about the main character. in the end when the main character was running from the sheriff . Why in the middle of a high speed escape is she stopping at that motel under such distress, and in fear seemed a little absurd .I did enjoy the tone of the narrators voice, which did help follow along with the story that often felt unexplained fully., But in the end I’m not quite sure I would recommend the story to a friend because I don’t think I could really properly describe what the point of the story Is or what the author was trying to convey or make the reader feel.

The story could have filled out more and editing would have spotted some irregularities. I really liked the idea.

Lived the narration!! I loved the historical perspective.
