When his father dies, Jawad is left alone in a strange city and with a strange power that pulses within him. At a safehouse, he meets a young woman, Alara. He keeps his powers hidden from her. She also has her secrets.

As an ancient evil seeps into the Kingdom, Jawad and Alara face undead creatures, power-hungry nobles, and sorceresses from ancient Orders who have come to the Kingdom seeking a powerful artefact. But first, they have to overcome their differences.

And Jawad must embrace his legacy, which he fears and despises, and become what he had never imagined being--a Blood Mage.
