The Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

Episode Notes: When Justice and Mercy Collide. (1 Kings 21: 1-29)

According to Scripture, two of the greatest virtues God calls us to practice are justice and mercy. Both are essential, and both reflect the character of God. However, sometimes life places us in situations where those two virtues seem to pull in opposite directions. Do I show justice here… Or do I show mercy? Which one is right in that moment? And that’s why we need a third virtue, and the bible calls that one, wisdom. Wisdom is what helps us discern when to apply justice, when to extend mercy, and how to hold both together in the same situation. Interestingly, 1 Kings 21 tells a story in which justice and mercy are both at play, and it is one of the most quoted episodes in the life of King Ahab.

  • Don't Lose God's Blessing. (1 Kings 20: 1-43)

The Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

    Episode Notes: Don't Lose God's Blessing. (1 Kings 20: 1-43)

The Bible has shaped Western civilization more than any other book in history.

Our ethics, our laws, our sense of justice—so much of it flows straight out of Scripture. But the Bible hasn’t just shaped our laws, it has also shaped our language.

When the Bible was translated into English first by Tyndale and then with the KJV, which draws heavily on Tyndale's translation, it became the most widely read book in the English‑speaking world; its idioms, its expressions, and its imagery seeped into everyday speech. So much so that we use biblical phrases all the time without even realizing it.

Expressions like “the writing is on the wall.” Or “the apple of his eye.” Or “a drop in the bucket.” Or how about, “by the skin of your teeth.”

There are dozens of these, but today I want to look at just one of them. But instead of giving it to you upfront, I’m going to tell you the story behind it—and you see if you can work out the idiom by the time we get to the end.

And the story behind it is found in 1 Kings chapter 20….

Episode Notes: How God Encourages Us - Part 1. (1 Kings 19: 1-21)

Everybody gets discouraged. It doesn’t matter who you are or what season of life you’re in; sooner or later, you hit a moment where the wind goes out of your sails. You feel disheartened. Dispirited. Like someone letting the air out of your emotional balloon.

So, the question isn’t if that happens, the question is: what do you do when it happens?

That’s what we’re going to explore today because one of the most famous, powerful, courageous figures in all of Scripture—Elijah—hit a wall of discouragement so hard it nearly crushed him. And the way God dealt with him is incredibly helpful for us all to know…..

Does God challenge you, and if so, how does God challenge someone? Well, the short answer is, spoiler alert… Yes—He does, and there is a passage of Scripture where God issues a challenge so dramatic, so unforgettable, that it has become one of the most famous stories in the entire Old Testament…. And that’s what we are going to look at today….

  • How God Teaches People. (1 Kings 17: 1-24)

The Bible Project Daily Podcast is a daily, in-depth, encouraging, and uplifting study through the entire Bible, chapter by chapter, verse by verse.

Today's Episode: How God Teaches People. (1 Kings 17: 1-24)

What does it take for a person to prepare for ministry?

Most people immediately think, “Well, you’ve got to go to bible college or university to do that.” And if you’re talking about becoming a pastor, perhaps that’s an advantage, although plenty of people have served the Lord faithfully without ever setting foot in a university classroom. But that’s not what I mean by ministry.

According to Ephesians 4, if you have trusted Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins—if you know that issue is settled and heaven is your home—then you are already in the ministry.

Most people sitting in a pew don’t think of themselves that way, but biblically, every believer is a minister. So how then does God prepare His people to serve Him?

There are many answers to that question, but there is one fascinating passage in the Old Testament that gives us a living, breathing example of how God shapes one man for ministry, and that man was called Elijah….

Today's Episode: God’s Standard for Bad Behaviour. (1 Kings 15:16-16:34)

One of the remarkable things about Scripture is the way God teaches us. Because He doesn’t just give abstract principles, he gives illustrations, he uses stories, and he shows us the lives of ordinary people.

Last time, in chapter 15, God evaluated several kings by the standard of one man—David. But today, as we move into the second half of chapter 15 and on into chapter 16, something shifts. God still uses a human example—but this time, it’s not David, it’s Jeroboam, and that tells you something right away:

If David is God’s standard of faithfulness, now Jeroboam will become God’s standard of failure because his influence becomes the yardstick by which the next generation—and the next, and the next, right down tio this day, is judged….
