Sex, vampires, espionage, warfare.

Brain Downes does an excellent job of weaving an enthralling story set in a highly recorded time in history. He's excels at character building and is able to infuse humanity into fictional characters.

I really enjoyed getting a first person account of a man trying to navigate a rapidly shifting society where one misstep can lead to a state execution. I enjoy this author's descriptions.He is able to paint vivid scenes in my mind's eye. I'm impressed with his ability to render scenes of gore and horror as well as quiet moments of warmth and calm. I'm looking forward to this author's future work.

Well researched and well done

Historical fiction is my favorite genre and, although I am not so much into horror, I thouoghly enjoyed this book. A couple of times I laughed out loud and several times at the end of a scene I would relax, not realizing I had been holding the tension of the events in my shoulders.

I had a vampire nightmare one night after consuming some chapters near the end, an unexpected bonus.

There were several times throughout the book where I appreciated the author’s artfully descriptive language. A very enjoyable read.

I noticed someone commented about not approving of the narration. I prefer books read by the author and feel it gives them another layer and intimacy to hear it exactly as the author intended and imagined. His narration added to the experience of the book. No complaints!

Couldn’t finish

The idea of this story really interested me. However, it sounds like the narrator, who’s also the author, is recording from his basement.

Story seems ok, but can't get past the performance

Should have had a professional voice actor read the book.
The author keeps pausing as if turning the page which becomes more and more unbearable.
