"The rock-n-roll fable we all need right now" tells the story of an unlikely group of musicians who are brought together through the power of music when something miraculous happens. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing and explosively creative neighborhood—and seen through the eyes of people who have experienced true devastation—we find this unintended troupe bringing a community together across cultural, generational, and ethnic divides. But can some things—even good and true things—get too big for their own good? Might the mission—individually and collectively understood—of this band of Lost Dogs—be compromised by their own “success”?

“John Thompson spins a yarn here that covers a lot of my favorite themes: music, social movements, and the deep territory of the human heart. The story carried me along with intricately developed characters and musical descriptions only an insider could know. I’d say it was a page-turner if I had turned any pages, which I didn’t. I listened to the audio version, which I highly recommend.” (Don Chaffer, Singer/Songwriter with the band Waterdeep, Professor of Music.)

As I read this book, I felt like I was becoming friends with these characters. They were written in a way that made me admire them, sympathize with then, and rejoice with them. I felt like I was watching their stories unfold in my own neighborhood from the comfort of my own front porch. There were lots of smiles on my face as I watched God weaving their lives together and revealing Himeslf to them in different ways!

This story feels almost like a parable. Ordinary, broken people finding love and community through the a shared calling and the common language of music.

I’ve tried many times to describe to non-musicians what it’s like to let art take you places you never expected to go…almost always unsuccessfully. John writes from a place of knowing - you can tell he’s experienced finding the pocket, and moving an audience. The characters in this book are three dimensional. I would love to sit down for a meal with Caesar and Jerry and Louis. But the question that confronts this unlikely band is deciding what is real success - and what do you do with the power of your platform. In an age of Insta-famous and celebrity worship, those who have the ears and eyes of the masses could use to take a listen to this fable.
And…the chapter bumpers on the audio version are an added bonus! Some tasty melodies!

This is what we love about music
