Hammett is widely regarded as one of the finest mystery writers of all time and was called, in his obituary in The New York Times, "the dean of the...'hard-boiled' school of detective fiction." Ths short novellette is a crime story with an intricate plot and characters, and a surprise twist at the end.

rather lackluster narration may have spoiled it
i like Hammett in general, but with this one, i think the narration may have failed to engage me enough, and i found myself wandering and daydreaming. so it may be the story is perfectly fine, perhaps a lesser story, and i can't really judge it properly.
